What Do I Do If I Get Locked Out of My Home?

Rarely, things will happen that disrupt the flow of your smart home and you may find yourself locked out of your home. If you find yourself locked out, evaluate your situation. For example, if you notice the keypad flashing odd numbers (1,3,5,7,9) in an X pattern when you try to enter your code, this indicates that the lock may be physically jammed. Another possibility might be that you are locked out because your code is simply not working and your app is not unlocking your door successfully.

Locked Out and Access Code Is Not Working:

To get help with your Access Code, follow these steps:

  1. In the SmartRent Mobile App, tap your Account Avatar in the top right corner
  2. Tap Support
  3. Tap I’m Locked Out
  4. Once the new web page opens, select the criteria that align with your case and follow the Wizard and images
  5. Alternatively, you can select Skip this and send me a code
    • Enter your Email or Phone Number
    • Tap Get Code

You will receive a link with your backup code via text message, as well as to the email associated with your account. The phone number you enter MUST match the phone number associated with your account or you will not receive the link with your backup code. The link to view your backup code will expire after 30 minutes from when it was requested. You will need to request a new link to view the backup code again if you did not get a chance to view the code within those 30 minutes.

Locked Out and Lock Is Flashing Odd Numbers (1,3,5,7,9):

If the lock makes an unusual beep when locking or unlocking and the face of the lock flashes odd numbers (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) in an X pattern, the lock is jammed. This means the deadbolt is not able to extend or retract, or the motor in the lock is malfunctioning. This is most common on wooden doors when there is a change in the weather that causes the door to swell or shrink, creating a misalignment of the door and frame.

This is a hardware issue and will occur regardless of which code is being used. Once the jam is cleared, existing access codes should work as usual. To address this issue, try:

  • Pushing or pulling the door to realign the door with the door frame and enter the code at the same time
  • Jiggling the door and entering the access code simultaneously

If your lock is jamming on a routine basis, or if you are unable to get it open with the above steps, you will want to notify your property's on-site maintenance team. They should be able to adjust your door frame, weatherstripping, and/or door strike in order to fix the issue.
