How to Set Up Apple Wallet Credentials

Getting Started

  1. If you haven’t already done so, set up your SmartRent account. You should have received an email with setup instructions. If you didn’t receive this email, contact your property team for help. 
  2. Click the link in the email and sign in using your SmartRent credentials. 
  3. Select "Add to Apple Wallet."
  4. Enter Your Apple ID Credentials when prompted.

  6. Done! It may take several minutes before the lock is ready to utilize your Apple Wallet credential. 

Using Your Digital Key

  • Hold your device near the center of the lock or access reader face to gain access.
  • With Express Mode enabled (default) you don't need to wake or unlock your iPhone or Apple Watch when using Apple Wallet to unlock your door.

Alternative Access Option 

You can still use your unique PIN code or fob (if applicable) to move throughout your community and gain access to unit doors.

Q: How secure are keys in Apple Wallet?

A: Your privacy matters. When your SmartRent key is added to Apple Wallet, it stays on your device. Apple doesn't see where you go or when – your access data remains private and secure.

 

Q: How should I hold my iPhone up to the lock/reader? 

A: Point the top center of the iPhone to the center of the reader/lock. You may need to hold your iPhone very close to the reader/lock if you have a protective case on your iPhone. 

 

Q: How should I hold my Apple Watch up to the lock/reader? 

A: Hold the center of your Apple Watch up to the center of the lock/reader.

 

Q: What do I need to get started with keys in Apple Wallet?

A: To get started with Keys in Apple Wallet for SmartRent, you'll need:

  • An iPhone XS/XS Max/XR or newer running the latest iOS
  • Or Apple Watch Series 4 or newer running the latest watchOS.
  • An Apple ID: Make sure you're signed into iCloud with your Apple ID.
  • A SmartRent Resident Account: This is necessary to confirm your identity and generate the secure passwords needed for your keys.

Note: An Apple Watch is not required to utilize your SmartRent key in Apple Wallet on your iPhone exclusively however an iPhone is required to utilize Apple Wallet on your Apple Watch. 

 

I am not able to add or use my SmartRent key to Apple Wallet. What do I do?

Q: Does it cost anything?

A: Enjoy the convenience of keyless access at no extra cost! Adding and using your SmartRent key in Apple Wallet is completely free. 

 

Q: Do I need to unlock my iPhone every time to use my SmartRent key in Apple Wallet?

A: With Express Mode, you don’t need to wake or unlock your iPhone or Apple Watch to use your SmartRent key in Apple Wallet. For more details on Express Mode, see here.

Q: What happens if my iPhone needs to be charged? Can I still use my SmartRent key in Apple Wallet if my iPhone has a dead battery?

A: Even if your iPhone's battery is low, your SmartRent key in Apple Wallet has you covered. On iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, and newer models, Power Reserve gives you up to five hours of access after your phone needs charging – so you'll never be locked out. Q: Can I use SmartRent in Apple Wallet without cellular signal?

A: No signal, no problem! Your SmartRent key in Apple Wallet works even without an internet connection because it's stored directly on your device. If you experience any issues using your key, please contact the SmartRent Office at support@smartrent.com or call (833) 767-8736 for assistance.

 

Q: What happens to my SmartRent key in Apple Wallet if I lose my iPhone or Apple Watch?

A: If your iPhone or Apple Watch is misplaced or lost, you should use Find My iPhone to suspend or deactivate your SmartRent Card in Apple Wallet. Instructions for Lost/Found Apple devices and Find My iPhone are located at https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201472.

Your SmartRent key in Apple Wallet will then be reactivated once your device is recovered. You can reactivate a found device that was suspended via iCloud.com.

 

Q: What functionality is available with SmartRent key in Apple Wallet?

A: SmartRent in Apple Wallet can be used to lock and unlock your front door or community areas around your property. 

 

Q: What happens if I get a new iPhone or Apple Watch?

A: You should first remove your pass from your old device in the Apple Wallet app. Once your old pass is removed, you can add your pass to the new device by using the the SmartRent Resident Web Portal.

 

Q: How do I remove my SmartRent key from Apple Wallet?

A: On your iPhone, open Apple Wallet. Select your SmartRent key.

Tap the More button. Then to delete a SmartRent key, just tap Remove Key. See more details here.

 

Q: How do I verify my Apple Watch device and WatchOS version?

A: The Series # for your Apple Watch can be found on the back of the Apple Watch. 

Note: Series 0 Apple Watch is not eligible for this program.

Q: On how many devices (iPhone/Apple Watch) can I use my SmartRent key in Apple Wallet?

A: You can use your SmartRent key on 1 iPhone and 1 Apple Watch per resident. They all need to be signed into the same iCloud account and Apple ID.
