Recent hurricane activity has severely impacted the southeast, leaving millions without power and resulting in widespread structural damage. On behalf of everyone at SmartRent, we hope that you are safe and that any sustained property damage is minimal.
In this challenging time, we want to do our part to help expedite the rebuilding process so you can put these events behind you as soon as possible.
Battery-Powered Locks: Accessible Without Power or Cell Service
Rest assured that your unit locks are battery-powered, allowing you to continue accessing your units even in the event of a power outage or loss of cellular service. These locks operate independently of the main power and cellular network, so you should have no issues accessing your unit as long as you know their access codes. We recommend keeping your access codes handy to access your unit if your cannot use your app due to loss of cell service.
Common Area Access Control: Built-In Failure Modes
SmartRent’s access control systems are typically implemented with a back-up battery system that provides an additional 24-48 hours of power during an outage. If power remains out and batteries become depleted, in accordance with fire codes and depending on the community’s decision made during installation, community access point doors are either configured to a fail-safe state where doors are automatically unlocked or a fail-secure state where access point doors remain locked when power is lost. Communities should know if their access points are either fail-safe or fail-secure depending on fire code.
